Announcing the arrival of the first A380 in S'pore

IN A welcome fit for the 'new queen in the sky', the world's first Airbus 380 superjumbo landed at Changi Airport at about 6.40pm on Wednesday to a water cannon salute.

It is a privilege reserved for the very special and the double-decker jet christened 9V-SKA on the Singapore aircraft register is believed to the first to receive such an honour at Changi.

Dressed in SIA's livery, the giant bird - as long as a soccer pitch and with a tail seven storeys high - flew in in from the the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse.

It was towed into position and docked at the soon-to-be-opened Terminal 3, where Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and about several hundred guests had gathered since 6pm in eager anticipation.

The giant bird's flight to Singapore was piloted by a four-member SIA crew led by chief A-380 pilot Captain Robert Ting.

Movie Talk

It is a fact that Tyler has the capacity to direct, and make all kinds of films, that he can make a BIG difference, and to show he has the ability to NOT be a steriotype only comedy making filmmaker. To show that he can be diverse. To mix it up sometimes, some comedies, some dramas, some thrillers, some science fiction. It is that his films are ALWAYS THE SAME STYLE. What is wrong with diversity even in black movies? Too many of our movies are ALWAYS comedies and many of our great actors in them are typed cast, to never escape this, or to be some kind of side kick in predominately white cast films. It is just irrating to see most of the OUR films on the big screen, as a bunch of knee slapping, heckling and jeckling, grinning and jinning blacks ALL THE TIME.

It is Hollywood that looks at at us as mostly coons and bafoonery, and Hollywood that gives out the checks to only fund these comedy films for us, only looking for a quick way to make a fast buck.

Actor Heath Ledger has died from possible non-prescription and ...

The 28-year-old Academy Award-nominated actor has been found dead in his New York residence in Soho. According to NYPD, Ledger's housekeeper and a masseuse found the actor unconscious on his bed around 3:30pm ET. When he did not respond after they tried to wake him up, they had immediately called 911. The police said no foul play was likely involved. They had found pills near the body. Ledger was reportedly in full cardiac arrest when the paramedics responded. CPR was performed, but the actor was pronounced dead on the scene. Ledger is probably best known for his controversial and award-nominated role as Ennis del Mar in 'Brokeback Mountain'. He had gained fan base with the 1999 movie '10 Things I Hate About You' and 'A Knights Tale.' He was set to play Joker in the forthcoming Batman film 'The Dark Knight.' Ledger has a two-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, with ex girlfriend Michelle Williams. .

Park won't try to replace historic Grand Canyon gift shop

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. — The National Park Service says it won't try to find another company to run the historic Verkamp's Curios gift shop on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, ending a 100-year run for the family owned store.

The Verkamp family decided not to bid to run the shop when the Park Service asked for proposals last year.

The Park Service has decided not to seek other bidders and will find other uses for the building once they buy out the family's interest in the building. The family began selling trinkets out of a tent and built the shop in 1906, living there until the mid-1980s.

Millions of visitors have bought curios, Indian blankets, baskets, pottery and other souvenirs at the site. It is set to close in September.

Inside QuickTime Pro's bag of tricks

At some point, most Mac users have probably whiled away a few company minutes watching Apple's QuickTime movie trailers. But QuickTime can do much more than just bring you the latest Spider-Man 3 teaser. Apple's QuickTime Player application is a surprisingly feature-packed utility capable of recording and editing movies, and even handling a few video effects. The key to realizing its power is to fork over $30 at the Apple Store and upgrade to QuickTime 7 Pro.

Make your own videos

After you do that, you'll notice that QuickTime Pro has made QuickTime Player better. You can play videos in full-screen mode and save movie trailers downloaded from the Web.

And now you don't have to be relegated to the role of audience member. Combining QuickTime with Apple's iSight gives you an instant recording studio.

RANGERS BETTER, BUT...

If Colton Orr can't play, Sjoberg likely would replace Sunday temporary fill-in Marcel Hossa, gone to the Coyotes.

So again, small picture: it was a good trade-deadline day for the Rangers and GM Glen Sather, who yielded nothing of apparent value within the organization and who remained committed to developing from within.

Big picture, however, is that it took less than three seasons for the Rangers to admit that their selection of Al Montoya out of Michigan at sixth overall in the 2004 Entry Draft had somehow turned into an unmitigated disaster. It took less than three years for the Rangers to admit their failure at the top of the board.

They took Montoya when they already had Henrik Lundqvist within their sights - but obviously didn't know what quite they had - instead of Rostislav Olesz, Drew Stafford or Alexander Radulov.
