Analysis: Are the New iPhones Worth the Price?

The 32GB iPod touch—double the original's capacity—will also sell for $499, while the original 8GB and 16GB models will maintain their $399 and $299 price tags.

The big story here is really the iPod touch, for which many consumers have been waiting to reach the 32GB mark. It's the first flash memory iPod to truly enter a capacity realm traditionally reserved for hard disks. (Though Creative and SanDisk both beat Apple to the 32GB capacity.) The price may simply be too high, however—$500 for an iPhone already seems like a lot of money. Will consumers respond positively to a $500 iPod? As recently as 2004, Apple released a $600 iPod, the iPod Photo, and other iterations of the iPod have sold for $500 in the past, as well.

Times have changed, though, as a potential recession looms.

Obama Denies Assuring Canada on NAFTA

The adviser, Austan Goolsbee, said his comments to those officials were misinterpreted by the author, Joseph DeMora, who works for the Canadian consulate in Chicago and attended the meeting.

In Carrollton, Texas, Obama told reporters: "Nobody reached out to the Canadians to try to assure them of anything."

Asked why he had appeared to deny a report last week that such a meeting had taken place, Obama said: "That was the information I had at the time."

In Ottawa, Prime Minister Stephen Harper disputed the contention of his political opposition that Canadian officials leaked word of the meeting to complicate Obama's chances or to favor Republican Sen. John McCain, who strongly supports NAFTA.

Safe corporate social computing?

Look around at social and collaborative computing and what do you see? A complete hotch potch of different systems, some of which run safely behind the firewall, others which sit out there on someone else's servers. You hop from Flickr to Outlook to Skype to Facebook to discussion groups, or whatever. Each has its own approach and, often, integration is only possible through hyperlinks or copy/paste.

Add to this the fact that you're working on different devices, laptop, desktop, internet café terminal, mobile phone, Blackberry and so on and what have you got? A lot of time wasting, a lack of security and data distributed all over the show.

It can't last. To move forward we need to get to a point where all we're concerned about is doing stuff with our information and other people while the systems themselves move towards invisibility.

Sundance: Stars, snow, and social cyborgs

Back in the early days of the Sundance Film Festival, when video was considered an emerging technology, there were independent filmmakers, and there were technologists. The two didn't typically go hand in hand.

Fast forward to this year's festival, which starts Thursday and will for the first time feature a 3D film, and indies and techies are one and the same. These days, it's near impossible to be the former without being the latter, what with the conveniences and opportunities that come with the likes of high-definition cameras, advanced editing software, and the Internet as a distribution tool.

So it's no surprise that the 2008 festival--an increasingly star-studded 10-day indie-film showcase in snowy Park City, Utah--has stepped up its technology-related programming.

Wal-Mart encourages employee blog

On the same blog, a video game buyer for Wal-Mart slammed a "Star Wars" film as a "debacle" even though Wal-Mart still sells the movie.

Known for its strict, by-the-books culture - accepting a cup of coffee from a supplier can be a firing offense - Wal-Mart is now encouraging its merchants to speak frankly, even critically, about the products the chain carries.

This unusual new Web site, which was quietly created during the holiday shopping season, has become a forum for unvarnished rants about gadgets, raves about new video games and advice on selecting environmentally sustainable food.

River View didn't get a chance to defend its Division II state championship this year, but the Lady Bears still came away with some top recognition Monday for an outstanding season.

Kari Daugherty, who poured in 21 points per game this season, was named to the Division II All-Ohio squad by the Associated Press Monday.

New Division of Preventive Medicine in Department of Health

Humayun Chaudhry announced the creation of a new Division of Preventive Medicine, and rolled out several division initiatives to educate residents, students and county employees on healthier lifestyles.

Levy appointed Dr. Maureen Crowley of Westhampton, as the division’s director.

"We envision this new division to proactively address the pressing health issues that are affecting our county," said Levy. "Many of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the US -- heart disease, diabetes and stroke – involve risk factors associated with individual lifestyle behaviors that are potentially modifiable."

"Prevention is the key to keeping residents in good health," said Dr. Chaudhry. "With this new Division of Preventive Medicine we can create and promote opportunities for Suffolk County residents to take necessary steps to modify their eating and behavioral habits, with the aim of improving their health and preventing disease and premature death."

Included in the division’s activities will be:

A first-ever Suffolk County children’s health summit, being coordinated in May between the county and various school districts; A Workplace Wellness Conference to help employers promote healthy lifestyles and disease prevention among their employees; A health promotion pilot program for the 1,600 employees of the County Department of Health Services; An Asthma demonstration program in the county health centers.
