First Look: Apple TV, take two

Should Steve Jobs' presentation have blotted the functionality of the “original" Apple TV from your memory, allow me to compare and contrast that original device with the “Take Two" update announced during Jobs' address.

Price: Okay, easily done. The 40GB Apple TV sold for $299 and yesterday Apple shaved $70 from the price tag. The 160GB Apple TV, which those of us who preferred to stream our content thought bore more storage than necessary, moved from $399 to $329; another $70 price drop. (People who invested in the early days of the Apple TV will be rewarded not by a $70 rebate but by receiving the new "Take Two" software update as a free download in two weeks.)

Content: For the most part, you had to move content to the original Apple TV from your computer (streaming YouTube videos and previews from the iTunes Store being the exception).

PLENTY OF FUN TO ENJOY

Director Casper Andreas gives A Four Letter Word a fun, sexy and romantic edge.

The comedy, set in Manhattan and screening as part of this year’s Queer Screen Film Festival, revolves around five New Yorkers exploring sexuality, relationships and their neighbours’ bodies.

Promiscuous Luke contemplates monogamy with ultra-hot hustler Stephen. Long-time lovers Peter and Derek struggle with moving in together while activist Zeke tries to change the world one confrontation at a time.

Meanwhile, Peter’s boss Marilyn freaks out as her wedding draws closer and her AA sponsor, Trisha, declares her love.

A Four Letter Word is a spin-off of Andreas’s 2004 Slutty Summer and, according to this year’s film festival organisers, is one of the must-sees this year.

Booze, divorce, designer handbags

A former Georgia Tech employee, Donna Gamble, is accused of making more than $316,000 in purchases for personal use on a state-issued credit card over a five-year period ending last year. This is a prime example of why Gov. Sonny Perdue's emphasis on getting a reliable management and accountability system in state government matters. If the Tech software geeks can write spam-filter software, surely they can write software that raises red flags about unusual purchases such as, for example, designer handbags.

• State Sen. David J. Shafer (R-Duluth) makes a convincing case that the Tennessee River flows through Georgia. A mapmaker's error in 1818 put 1.1 miles of Georgia into Tennessee, says he. Shafer wants a commission to precisely establish the location of the 35th parallel, the line between the two states.

Nikon D60 SLR Packs a Punch

There was a time, back in the days of film (you remember film, don't you?), when Nikon, competing with Canon as industry leader in SLR cameras, made one flagship model and stuck with it. The Nikon F3 was its top-of-the-line camera for 17 years.

Today, 17 months is a long time. Nikon now manufactures eight different digital SLRs and, in the spirit of the digital age, keeps updating them. Less than a year after the 10-megapixel D40x, here's the 10-megapixel D60.
