Obituaries in the news

Di Stefano was at the height of his career when other stars of contemporary opera were taking their first steps. Luciano Pavarotti, who died in September, had his big international break when he stood in for Di Stefano as Rodolfo in Puccini's "La Boheme" at London's Covent Garden in 1963.

At the Met, Di Stefano sang in 112 performances from 1948 to 1965, making his debut in Verdi's "Rigoletto" as the Duke.

Fedorchuk died Friday in Moscow of an unspecified illness, said the Federal Security Service, the main KGB successor agency.

iMovie versus Final Cut Express

When I learned that I'd be part of the Macworld Video production team, I was both excited and more than a bit apprehensive. I was excited because I enjoy working in video, though it never seems I have enough time to do so, and nervous because Apple had recently (with the introduction of iLife '08) basically killed off my video production tool of choice: iMovie HD. iLife '08 includes a program named iMovie '08, but it's related to its predecessor in name only—iMovie '08 is a completely new program.

While iMovie '08 added a number of interesting features beyond those offered in iMovie HD, it also removed quite a few, and more importantly to me, created a completely new paradigm for video editing. In a typical video-editing app, such as iMovie HD, you have a spot to store your video clips, and a timeline on which to place them.

In the mind's eye, it's now Marissa versus Monkeyboy

Posted in:

Apple Microsoft Silicon Valley Wall Street Google

Funny how the mind works. Sometimes it just makes associations whether you want it to or not.

And now that I've read the feature article on Google's Marissa Mayer in San Francisco magazine, the images from that profile are etched into my mind whenever I think of Google, or even go to Google's gaggle of sites, services, and features. There is now continuity between Marissa, Google and me.

These are actually quite pleasant, floating images of a lower Market Street aerie, with purple walls and the home-spun smell of vanilla-laced cupcakes (supported lovingly by pleated paper).

Bunny Town!

The other 475 are mostly feral rabbits, or pets that have gone wild and probably can't be tamed again.

Reno 911

The feral bunnies arrived two years ago from a shelter in Reno, Nevada, after the owner got sick and was hospitalized. People continued to drop off unwanted rabbits. But the pets weren't sterilized and eventually, there were 1600 rabbits in the woman's backyard! They had all gone feral and most were sick.

"Two bunnies can produce about 100 rabbits a year," said Celeste. "She tried to take care of them but it was just overwhelming."

Great Lakes agreed to take about 500 of the feral bunnies in exchange for help building a hospital and buying food, medicine and other supplies.

"I believe wholeheartedly we're doing the right thing," said Tim Patino, president of the nonprofit Michigan sanctuary.
