Rowling sues publisher, says she's upset by fan

Rowling brought the lawsuit last Halloween along with film company Warner Bros., which owns the intellectual property related to the Potter books and movies. The lexicon's publication, previously scheduled for November 28, 2007, has been blocked by the lawsuit.

RDR Books publisher Roger Rapoport has said the lexicon would not compete with any official encyclopedia written by Rowling.

On its Web site, RDR Books said it was "determined to publish this book for the benefit of Harry Potter fans everywhere."

It said it "believes Ms. Rowling, who has championed the 'Lexicon' for years, will love reading the book just as much as she does the Web site on which it is based."

In the past, Rowling had singled out the Web site and its editor for praise.

Soundtrack 1.0

Apple's Soundtrack made its debut last June, as part of the massive video-editing bundle Final Cut Pro 4. But now the same Soundtrack software is available as a stand-alone product. This puts Soundtrack within reach of video editors, Web designers, and content providers who don't need the rest of the Final Cut Pro 4 package.

Soundtrack 1.0.1 is a fun program based on sound loops. It lets you quickly create original, royalty-free music for video and multimedia projects.

It requires at least a 500MHz Power Mac, Mac OS X 10.2.5, and 5GB of available hard-drive space. Apple's official specs say that you can install the program with a CD and that the sound loops, called Apple Loops, on the included DVD are optional, but this isn't really the case. Soundtrack's entire appeal lies in the fact that it lets you mix and match the 4GB of material it provides.

The Incredible Hulk Trailer Coming Early March

Marvel Entertainment announced its fourth quarter and full year operating results this morning, and with it came the news that you'll be seeing the first trailer for The Incredible Hulk in early March. Our guess is that it will hit theaters with Warner Bros.' PG-13 rated 10,000 B.C. on March 7 (if that's true, make sure you call your theater to see if the trailer is playing with the showtime you're thinking of attending, as it will likely not be on every screen) and then with the R-rated Universal (the studio releasing "Hulk" in theaters) pic Doomsday on March 14. Also, it was revealed that, because of the writers strike and possible actors strike, Marvel Studios will have one in-house release in the later part of 2009, instead of two like this year (Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk), but it's anyone's guess right not if that is Ant-Man, Captain America, Thor or The Avengers.

Cape & Islands News

While moderate to high level nutrient-related impacts were reported in systems from all coasts, the Mid-Atlantic region, stretching south from Cape Cod to the Chesapeake Bay, is the most impairedThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration today released a comprehensive assessment of estuarine eutrophication, or nutrient pollution, that clearly indicates linkages between upstream activities and coastal ecosystem health. The report shows that the majority of U.S. estuaries assessed are highly influenced by human-related activities and points out that eutrophication is a widespread problem globally. "Observations have confirmed that our nation’s coastal waters are stressed," said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.

Brent Batten: One man, two votes in school debate

Withers, back on the job Monday, said Calabrese's vote is final. Superintendent Dennis Thompson has been given direction by the board to devise a seven-period schedule to replace the block schedule and it will be up to Thompson whether he wants to bring the board back into the discussion.

Under state law, “(Thompson) has a lot of authority at this point in terms of the schedule. The question of the schedule is really the superintendent's bailiwick," Withers said.

Abbott, like Calabrese, doesn't support the block schedule in the long term. But she says the school system did a poor job of communicating and wants more time to inform the public about the benefits of a change.

She says alternatives, including ones that fall outside the traditional seven-period schedule, should be presented during a public information campaign over the next several months with a decision ideally made before the end of the year.

Wild Card -- Tuesday PM

For those keeping score at home, there was a good reason why Duane Hagadone pulled his memorial garden request in December. He woulda gotten clobbered at the polls. On Dec. 15, two days before he pulled the request, internal polling for the library bond showed the downtown garden proposals failing 72% to 28% (outta 756 replies). This, while the poll showed the library passing with 63% and the public safety bond with 56%). And you were wondering why The Duane didn't want to risk an advisory vote?

*I visited the Ron Rankin Veterans Memorial Plaza this p.m., and I'm certain The Ronfather woulda been pleased. You don't get the impact of the eagle statue, donated by the Rankin family, from photos. It's huge. And the new war mural of the kneeling Marines at Fallujah ... well, you can't visit the plaza without feeling as though you're on holy ground.

Photographs and Memories

The family stories on these pages emerged from readers' letters and interviews with writer Katie Thomas. Though the accounts were edited for clarity and to fit the format of "Our Family Album," our goal throughout was to present them in the voices of the Long Islanders you will meet in this section. The families, old pictures and documents in "Our Family Album" were photographed by Tom Ferrara, with additional photography by Bill Davis, John H. Cornell Jr. and Viorel Florescu.
